The power of community-based participatory research (CBPR).

Abstract: Objective: Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is based on power as fundamental to doing research. It evolved as a way of "knowing" from the broader idea of natural science. While previously viewed as objective, natural science is now understood as, at least, partially socially constructed. Method: History of research and epistemology is reviewed in terms of science. More specifically, we delve into science as social construction and how this conceptually opens the door to considering power in its pr… Show more

“…Participatory methods represent an orientation to inquiry that recognises the value in constructing knowledge through the convergence of experiential and theoretical perspectives ( Kemmis & McTaggart, 2005 ). Acknowledgement that research is grounded in power relations is evident in participatory approaches that seek to redress power disparities through establishing equalising collaborative structures ( Corrigan & Oppenheim, 2023 ). While power differentials cannot be eliminated, by recognising that they exist and enacting strategies to mitigate their effects we can reduce their impact in data production and analysis ( Gladstone & Stasiulis, 2017 ; Swadener, 2005 ).…”
