The precipitation behavior of a pretwinned Mg–6Al–1Zn alloy and the effect on subsequent deformation

Abstract: In this study, the precipitation behavior of the pretwinned extruded Mg-6Al-1Zn alloy was investigated. It was observed that the precipitates preferentially nucleated at the twin boundaries or within the preexistent twins. This distribution of the precipitates led to the distinguishing influences on subsequent compression and tension process, which were dominated by twinning and detwinning of the preexistent twins, respectively. The compressive yield strength after aging was a little lower than the stress when… Show more

“…When compared to as-cast alloys, wrought Mg alloys can generate profuse {10–12} twins by deformation along special directions [42]. Zhang et al [43] have fabricated an extruded AZ61 rod containing profuse {10–12} twin lamellae by compression along extrusion direction (to a plastic strain of ~3%). The preferential nucleation of precipitates in the twin boundaries and within twins has also been observed in pre-twinned AZ61 alloy during aging at 180 °C.…”

“…On the other hand, coarse lath or plate‐like precipitate lamellae that generally nucleate from grain boundaries (i.e., the discontinuous precipitation) can be retarded . Moreover, it was found that precipitate preferred to nucleate from twin boundaries . However, the effects of pre‐generated twins and twin boundaries on the features of precipitates and the mechanical properties have not been systematically investigated.…”

“…In addition to the effects of twinning on the resulting texture and workability of the alloy [12,13], twinning influence also the precipitation behavior. Numerous studies have been reported on the interactions between twins and pre-existing precipitates within the matrix, and phenomena such as impingement, bypassing or engulfment of precipitates have been observed [14][15][16]. However, few studies have examined the effect of twinning on precipitate formation during deformation [14,17,18].…”
