“…(Further empirical support for this conclusion can be found in comparisons of drug users and nonusers by Cohen and Klein, [1972], Glaser, Lander, and Abbott [1971], Gordon [1972], Green, Blake, Carboy, and Zehaysern [1971].) Knecht, Cundick, Edwards, and Gunderson (1972) reported a typical study of college students which supports this view; they found a negative correlation of .6 between scores on a social conformity scale and having used marijuana. White, Schoolar, and Cohen (1970) found that 25% of a nondrug-using group were in a personality category described as conformity/cooperative/conventional, while none of the heavy users were in this category.…”

“…The four psychological questionnaires (which were completed about 3 hours before surgery) were the Comrey Personality Scales (CPS), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Mood Questionnaire ' (MQ), and the Health Status Inventory (HSI). The CPS (Comrey & Backer, 1970) was used because it appears to validly describe those who may experience specific effects during nonmedical use • of psychotropic drugs (Knecht, Cundick, Edwards, & Gunderson, 1972), and the STAI (Spielberger, 1966) has been 'shown to measure presurgical anxiety associated with postoperative recovery (Auerbach, 1973). The HSI was developed by Biersner and Ryman (1974) and has been found to be predictive of medical problems that occur under hazardous conditions.…”

“…The single personality dimension that has emerged most often from research in the past decade has been the orientation characterized as conformity to societal values, traditionality, or, conversely, rebelliousness (Cunningham et al 19774;Goldstein and Sappington 1977;Simon 1974;Loper et al 1973;Hogan et al 1970;Green 1979). Increased drug use or earlier onset of drug use has been found to be correlated with nonconformity to traditional values (Gorsuch and Kay et al 1978;Weckowicz and Janssen 1973;Knecht et al 1972); lack of support for traditional social structures (Knight et al 1974); high tolerance of deviance Jessor 1976;; high resistance to traditional authority (Goldstein and Sappington 1977); and high need for independence or autonomy (Simon 1974;Jessor 1976;Segal 1975Segal , 1977Simon et al 1974).…”
