The Preparation and Properties of Gonococcal Pili

Abstract: Pili have been isolated from Neisseria gonorrhoeae by controlled homogenization followed by selective disaggregation in sucrose and purification by CsCl density gradient centrifugation. Pili from six gonococcal strains had buoyant densities of 1-30 to 1-31 g ml-l on CsCl. The pili were immunologically distinct when tested with rabbit antisera to purified pili. The amino acid composition of pilin from strains ~9 and 201 was very similar, consisting of 208 and 2 I 2 amino acid residues respectively giving molecu… Show more

“…The strong correlation between pili and S motility observed by Kaiser (15) suggests a function in cohesion, because the role of pili as attachment organelles has been demonstrated in a variety of pathogenic bacteria (2,9,17,21,23). M. xanthus pili about one cell length long were observed in a tuft at one of the cell poles (15).…”

“…In 1977, the first report on gonococcal pilus glycosylation (strain P9) was published (465). Dedicated research on the glycosylation of meningococcal and gonococcal pili emerged only in the early 1990s (289,(466)(467)(468)(469)(470) and has remained a hot topic in bacterial glycosylation with the discovery of the general character of the glycosylation machinery in 2009 (471).…”
