“…For anti-HCV-positive patients, the low platelet count also predicts the presence of HCV viremia with a sensitivity of 88.8%. Since the presence of HCV RNA plays an essential role in disease progression, there is the necessity for the effective interferon-based therapies developed to treat HCV infection [35][36][37][38][39] and low platelet count, not only those associated with positive anti-HCV but also those with HCV viremia; this should help clinicians identify patients with active HCV infection for further intervention. Abnormal ALT levels were associated with positive anti-HCV in the present study and were correlated with HCV viremia through the finding that HCV RNA is more commonly detected in subjects with abnormal ALT levels than in subjects with normal levels, as in the previous study [10].…”
