“…The reasons why the patients evaluated in this study presented to be sedentary, or were already sedentary before HD, are unknown; however, these numbers draw attention. Given the relative prevalence of depressive symptoms in the sample evaluated, it is believed that, like Watnick et al 36 , the possible reasons for depression at the start of the dialysis were changes in lifestyle and the losses caused by dialysis, such as the social role, independence and bodily functions. However, since the reasons were not investigated, it is suggested that further studies addressing these aspects are carried out.…”

“…Reports have indicated that mental health-related disorders are common in patients with chronic kidney disease (3) but are substantially undertreated (13) and lead to increased risk of death (4). Due to recommendations for screening for mental health-related disorders before transplant, it might be expected that psychosis would be significantly less common after renal transplantation than among dialysis patients.…”

“…These data indicate the importance of effective transitioning of patients between CKD and ESRD care and have provided impetus for the "Fistula First" initiative of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) (11). When a patient begins RRT, or transitions from one modality of care to another, there is a dramatic decline in quality-of-life measures (12,13). Furthermore, of patients who were on dialysis for Ͼ1 yr, only 24% returned to work after transplantation, compared with at least one half of those who received a transplant preemptively (14).…”
