The prevalence of 30 ICD-10 autoimmune diseases in Denmark

Abstract: Epidemiologic studies of autoimmune diseases have not considered them in the aggregate. The objective was to estimate the prevalence of 30 autoimmune diseases separately and in aggregate according to ICD-10 classification. The lifetime prevalence of the entire population of 5,506,574 persons alive in Denmark on October 31, 2006, was estimated by linking records of all visitors to hospitals and specialty clinics via National Patient Registers from January 1, 1977 through October 31, 2006. “…The perception of an infectious cause of schizophrenia emerged from anecdotal evidence over 150 years ago. Modern epidemiological evidence from national registries describes a cohort of individuals with genetic vulnerabilities for immune disorders and psychosis (Eaton et al, 2010;Severance et al, 2014aSeverance et al, , 2014b. Severe infections and autoimmune disorders over a lifetime appeared to confer additive risk for schizophrenia and schizophrenia spectrum disorders (Benros et al, 2013b;Meyer, 2011).…”

“…These diseases encompass a wide range of associated pathology, affecting many different tissue and organ sites. At present, 80–100 autoimmune diseases have been described, although detailed epidemiology is not available for all of them [1, 2]. The etiology of autoimmune diseases is not completely understood but is thought to involve gene-environmental interactions [3].…”
