The prevalence of allergic rhinitis and atopic markers in obstructive sleep apnea

Abstract: Allergic rhinitis (AR) related inflammation might worsen the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), however, the relationship between the two disorders remains controversial. Our aim was to determine the prevalence of AR and atopic markers in OSA. This cross-sectional study recruited participants with sleep-related complaints referred to a sleep center from February 2013 to June 2014. The diagnosis of OSA was based on the Berlin questionnaire (BQ) followed by confirmatory polysomnography (PSG). The diagnos… Show more

“…The data collection tool comprised of two main domains. It was developed based on the commonly reported exposures in literature (participants’ characteristics) [12, 19, 20] and the 2016 ARIA guidelines that defined the AR disease characteristics [21]. The participants’ characteristics were the study exposures, which included the sex, age (years), body mass index (BMI), area of residence, occupation, the presence of chronic medical conditions, disease duration, family history, and smoking status.…”

“…Despite the spread of AR worldwide and in particular within high risk countries such as Saudi Arabia, there is a dearth of studies investigating disease characteristics and local coping measures [12]. Saudi Arabia is known for its frequent and periodic sandstorms in all seasons.…”

“…Learning problems and excessive daytime sleepiness were comparable between children with SDB, SDB+RT and RT. As allergy is also considered as a risk factor for SDB ( Gadi et al., 2017 ; Zheng et al., 2017 ), we compared allergic presentations across groups. Rhinitis and itchy eyes were more prevalent in children with adenotonsillar diseases compared to healthy controls (p=0.001 and p=0.041) but prevalence amongst children with either SDB, SDB+RT or RT (p=0.625) was similar.…”

“…Interestingly, patients with OSA have significantly more rhinitis than those people who do not suffer with OSA. 67 Medical interventions to improve nasal patency at night can improve sleep quality, however, improvements in specific objective sleep parameters have not yet been identified. 68 In those patients with an obstructive nasal passage, treatment of this condition has also been shown to improve the efficacy of CPAP and patients' compliance with it.…”
