The prevalence of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease ready for antireflux surgery

Abstract: Coronary atherosclerosis (CAS) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) share common risk factors. The existing CAS may not only increase the possibility of GERD to be refractory GERD (RGERD), but also increase the risk of antireflux surgery for these patients. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of CAS and its potential risk factors in patients with RGERD ready for antireflux surgery. The retrospective analysis was performed in the digestive disease center of Suining Central Hospital, a ter… Show more

“…Furthermore, the study highlights the role of genetic factors in CHD incidence, with a family history of CHD emerging as a risk factor for CHD in young men, indicating a genetic predisposition to earlier CHD onset and increased susceptibility among young adults. Also, it is worth noting that having first-degree relatives with CHD can increase the risk of CHD by 2 to 10 times [12]. In this study, a family history of CHD emerged as a risk factor for CHD in young men, indicating that genetic factors associated with CHD may lead to its earlier onset and increased risk among young adults.…”

“…Symptoms of GERD can present as atypical chest pain similar to the symptoms of coronary atherosclerosis (CA) [7]. The risk factors for GERD include age, gender, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, increased BMI, social factors, psychosomatic diseases, etc., which overlap with those of CA [7][8][9][10]. Many patients with GERD combined with CA can be seen in the hospitals.…”
