The prevalence of nonalcoholic liver steatosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Czech Republic

Abstract: Aims. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with components of the metabolic syndrome (MS) but the prevalence of NAFLD in the Czech Republic is unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the latter in patients with type 2 diabetes (DM2) and to compare the noninvasive fibrosis scores with ultrasound findings in those patients. Methods. 180 consecutive patients with DM2 (mean age 64.2±9.3 years, 63% men) were examined for liver biochemistry, MS parameters and had liver ultrasound. MS was diagn… Show more

“…21 Our study showed a significantly higher triglyceride and total cholesterol levels in T2DM patients with NAFLD than without NAFLD. This has been reported in Western studies 22 as well as in Indian studies. 6 Karel Dvorak et al have reported an elevation only in triglycerides, but not cholesterol levels.…”

“…6 Karel Dvorak et al have reported an elevation only in triglycerides, but not cholesterol levels. 22 Treeprasertsuk et al reported that there is no significant difference of TG and TC levels in patients of NAFLD with low and high probability of advanced liver fibrosis by NAFLD fibrosis score at baseline. 23 It has been demonstrated that insulin resistance frequently associated with NAFLD leads to higher triglyceride synthesis and increased secretion of triglyceride from the liver.…”

“…However, there was a great disparity across studies in the estimated prevalence of NAFLD in T2DM patients, ranging from 45% to 80%. [ 14 , 15 ] This variation may be associated with the sample characteristics and the techniques used to make the diagnosis of NAFLD. [ 16 ] Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to explore the pooled prevalence of NAFLD in T2DM patients by synthesizing the reported data.…”

“…NAFLD is highly prevalent in patients with diabetes mellitus and increasing evidence suggests that patients with type-2 diabetes (T2DM) are at a particularly high risk for developing the progressive forms of NAFLD, NASH, advanced liver fibrosis, hepatocellular carcinoma development, and liver-related mortality [ 5 ]. In these individuals, prevalence of NAFLD ranges from 42.6% [ 6 ] to 79% [ 7 ]. It is noteworthy that these numbers vary from country to country and that nearly 13% of cases have already presented signs of cirrhosis [ 7 ].…”

It is noteworthy that these numbers vary from country to country and that nearly 13% of cases have already presented signs of cirrhosis [ 7 ]. In a sample of American persons with T2DM and normal serum levels of aminotransferases, prevalence of NAFLD and NASH was 76% and 56%, respectively [ 8 ].…”
