The prevalence of polycystic ovaries in Chinese women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus

Abstract: In the present study we aimed to define the prevalence of polycystic ovaries (PCO), using the revised ultrasound criterion, in Chinese women with previous gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), as well as their associated clinical, hormonal and biochemical characteristics. Seventy Chinese women with previous GDM were recruited as the study group. The control group comprised women matched for age, parity and delivery year who had a normal oral glucose tolerance test during their index pregnancy. Two- and three-di… Show more

“…PCOM is identified by pelvic or abdominal ultrasound and defined as R12 follicles in either ovary measuring 2-9 mm in diameter and/or increased ovarian volume >7 mL (13). The prevalence of PCOM has been suggested to be higher than 20% in both Western and Asian women (14,15) and is the most frequently used criterion in PCOS diagnosis (11). Our results showed that 93% of patients diagnosed with the Rotterdam criteria had polycystic ovaries.…”

“…The prevalence of PCOM/PCOS in type 1 diabetes mellitus was similar compared with previous reports 5 . There was a previous study where Chinese women with gestational diabetes mellitus were examined in regard to the prevalence of PCOM and compared with normal women 7 . In that study, the prevalence of PCOM in premenopausal Chinese normal women was 23%.…”

“…Using the revised ultrasound criteria, 5 we compared the prevalence of PCO between 70 Chinese women with previous GDM and 70 age-, parity-, and delivery-year matched women who had a normal oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) during their index pregnancy. 11 The GDM group had a higher though not statistically significant prevalence of PCO than did the control group (34.0% vs. 23.0%, respectively). Within the GDM group, there was no difference in the metabolic profiles between those with and without PCO, although the body mass index (BMI) and Ferriman-Gallwey score tended to be higher in women with PCO.…”
