The Price Elasticity of Natural Gas Demand in China: A Meta-Regression Analysis

Abstract: Since natural gas has become a new star in China’s energy mix, a reliable estimation of the price elasticity of natural gas demand is crucial if we are to understand how energy price changes affect natural gas consumption. In this paper, we conduct a Meta-regression analysis to quantitatively synthesize empirical estimates of the price elasticity of natural gas demand reported in previous studies, provide true underlying values, and explain the heterogeneity of the aforementioned estimates. The Fixed-effects m… Show more

“…In 2018, Ota et al [49] studied empirically the demographic impacts on electricity and natural gas consumption in the residential sector in 45 prefectures in Japan between 1990 and 2010, Gautam and Paudel [50] Zhang et al [16] analyzed the demand for natural gas by investigating the long-run price and income elasticities in various sectors in China using an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model. Chai et al [51] performed a met-regression analysis on previous studies on estimating price elasticities of natural gas to set up a benchmark value of elasticities, Zeng et al [52] investigated the response of natural gas consumption to a price change in the household sector and analyzed the mean factors impacting the demand for natural gas in China. Malzi et al [53] investigated residential natural gas demand in OECD countries by analyzing the main factors influencing natural gas consumption in these countries, including price, income, urbanization and demographic factors.…”

“…Gas reservoirs are playing a significant rule in the energy supply due to its abundance, low price, and low emission of greenhouse gases compared to crude oil [1]. Natural gas reservoirs are classified into wet gas, dry gas, or retrograde gas condensate; based on the reservoir conditions and hydrocarbon composition.…”
