The Pro-Environmental Behavior Task: A laboratory measure of actual pro-environmental behavior

Abstract: To address the limitations of self-report measures, we developed the Pro-Environmental Behavior Task (PEBT) as a computerized paradigm for the assessment of actual pro-environmental behavior under controlled laboratory conditions. On each PEBT trial, participants can either choose the faster car option, which causes a series of lights to be illuminated, or they can save the associated energy by choosing the bicycle option at the expense of spending more time in the laboratory. In two pre-registered studies (bo… Show more

“…Finally, and similar to Study 1, Study 2 revealed a medium-sized correlation between self-reported and task-based pro-environmental behaviour. Replicating earlier findings (Lange, Steinke, et al, 2018), this result provides further support for the validity of the PEBT as a measure of pro-environmental behaviour.…”

“…In the laboratory, such observations of different instances of pro-environmental behaviour could be conducted in a more time-efficient manner. Laboratory tasks have only recently gained popularity in the assessment of pro-environmental behaviour (Klein et al, 2017;Lange, Steinke, et al, 2018;Tarditi, Hahnel, Jeanmonod, Sander, & Brosch, 2018), and further research is required to clarify whether performance can be meaningfully aggregated across different tasks.…”

“…Overall, the fact that we have conducted these field experiments has important implications for environmental psychology, which have been subject to excessive reliance on self-reports as measures of pro-environmental behavior (Giuliani & Scopelliti, 2009;Lange, Steinke & Dewitte, 2018;Steg & Vlek, 2009). Most importantly, we were able to gather reliable data (in the form of behavior occurrence rates), which surpasses self-reporting measures in predicting the effectiveness of interventions aimed at fostering sustainability (Kromos & .…”
