The Raman Spectra of Surfactants and The Concentration Dependence of Their Molecular Conformations in Aqueous Solutions

Abstract: The laser Raman scattering by potassium n-alkyl carboxylates and sodium n-alkyl sulfates was measured in the solid state and aqueous solutions, and the concentration dependence of molecular conformations of these molecules was studied. For aqueous solutions of potassium n-hexanoate and potassium n-pentanoate, the Raman intensities of the accordion vibrations of the all-trans form relative to the skeletal deformation vibrations of the gauche isomers were found to increase with an increase in the concentration. … Show more

“…For the investigation of aqueous surfactant systems with its concentration range covering the critical micellization concentration (c.m.c. ), Raman spectroscopy was chiefly used to look at the structure of the hydrophobic alkyl chain [1][2][3][4]. More recently, resonance Raman technique has been applied to monitor structural changes in a hydrophilic chromophore of a surfactant upon micellization [5] and upon adsorption at a water-CC14 interface [6].…”

“…However, there are only a few studies of the relationship between the surface properties, such as critical micelle concentration (CMC), efficiency of surface tension reduction (pC 20 ), and area per molecule of N-acylated amino acid surfactants, and their chemical structure. As far as we know, studies have been limited to the derivatives of sarcosine (7), alanine, glycine (8,9) and glutamic acid (10,11) and have focused on the effect of the straight alkyl chain on the CMC and the conformational behavior in their aqueous micellar solutions (12)(13)(14)(15).In this study, a new type of highly purified N-substituted-N-acyl amino acids (Scheme 1), in which various short side alkyl chains R′ are attached to the peptide nitrogen atom between a long straight alkyl chain R of the acyl group and the main hydrophilic carboxylate group was examined in detail. The effect of structure on surface properties of this amino acid salt series was studied by varying the structure of both the main chain R and the side chain R′.…”

“…The exchange of H 2 O to D 2 O did not significantly influence the Laser-Raman results [109,110]. Based on normal coordinate analysis of rotational isomers of potassium pentanoate (362/380 cm -1 band) and potassium hexanoate (327/397 cm -1 and 424/397 cm -1 bands) it was found that the trans-trans and trans-gauche are equally probable in dilute solutions while the all trans-trans form becomes more stable in the micellar state [141,142].…”
