The ratio of monocyte frequency to HDL cholesterol level as a predictor of asymptomatic organ damage in patients with primary hypertension

Abstract: This study aimed to examine the relationship between the ratio of monocyte frequency to high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level (the monocyte/HDL ratio (MHR)) and asymptomatic organ damage (AOD) in primary hypertension (PHT). A total of 366 participants were enrolled in the study, including 275 cases currently being followed up after a diagnosis of PHT in our clinic and 91 healthy volunteers. The MHR was higher in patients with PHT than in individuals in the control group. In the PHT group, the MHR wa… Show more

“…AOD, that is, carotid intima media thickness, left ventricular mass index, urinary protein levels, and urinary albumin levels (Aydin, Ates, Fettah arikan, Yilmaz, & Dede, 2017). Elevated values of MHR were found in newly diagnosed untreated hypertensive patients when compared with healthy subjects; MHR levels correlated positively with the aortic stiffness index (r = 0.294) and negatively with aortic distensibility (r = −0.281).…”

“…MHR value was positively correlated with systolic and diastolic BP and serum glucose in our study. Similarly, Aydin et al reported that MHR value was observed to be increased in asymptomatic organ damage in primary hypertension (40).…”

“…Previous studies have showed that an elevated value of MHR correlated with the features of asymptomatic organ damage such as CIMT (40) and, aortic stiffness index (39). Inconsistence to this result, we observed that MHR value was not related to CIMT in patients with adrenal tumors.…”

“…As MHR is an inexpensive and readily available parameter, it has become more widely used in recent years, and has been related to several clinical conditions (13)(14)(15)(16). The relationship between OSAS and MHR was first investigated by Atan et al in 2007, and it was determined that MHR could be a predictive marker in OSAS diagnosis (17).…”
