An efficient method for the synthesis of naphthalene derivatives through reaction of o-alkynylbenzaldehydes and styrene oxides in the presence of molecular iodine was developed. The reaction involves Meinwald rearrangement of styrene oxides to form the corresponding aryl acetaldehydes.
