The recognition of multiple magmatic events and pre-existing deformation zones in metamorphic rocks as illustrated by CL signatures and numerical modelling: examples from the Ballachulish contact aureole, Scotland

Abstract: The combination of cathodoluminescence (CL) analysis, temperature and temperature-time calculations, and microstructural numerical modelling offers the possibility to derive the time-resolved evolution of a metamorphic rock. This combination of techniques is applied to a natural laboratory, namely the Ballachulish contact aureole, Scotland. Analysis of the Appin Quartzite reveals that the aureole was produced by two distinct magmatic events and infiltrated by associated fluids. Developing microstructures allow… Show more

“…11). In addition, newly grown grains show the expected restricted size range and exhibit zonations produced during growth similar to growth features seen in annealing rocks, which undergo normal grain growth (e.g., Holness and Watt 2001;Jessell et al 2003;Piazolo et al 2005;Bergmann and Piazolo 2012). Grain boundaries toward other Z-grains resemble a polygonal, foam textured grain boundary network with 120° triple junctions suggesting textural equilibrium between Z-grains (cf.…”

“…Tschermakite (Ts 3a&3b ) coarsens forming tabular to prismatic grains with decussate texture in the migmatite. Mobility of grain boundaries may be increased by the presence of an intergranular fluid or melt and/or increased temperature (Heilbronner & Tullis, , and references therein; Bergman & Piazolo, ). The fluxing of fluid or melt is likely to have been key during grain size coarsening, as expanded upon in the next section.…”

“…Inversely, grain size increase through annealing (temperature‐related coarsening and nucleation; e.g. Covey‐Crump, ; Heilbronner & Tullis, ; Bestmann et al ., ; Piazolo et al ., , ; Bergmann & Piazolo, ), namely grain boundary migration and grain growth (e.g. Urai et al ., ; Drury & Urai, ; Baker, ), will have the opposite rheological effect, thus strengthening the rock (see Jessell et al ., for further discussion).…”
