The recognizability of individual creative styles within and across domains.

Abstract: We present a set of studies that tested the hypothesis that creative style is recognizable within and across domains. Art students were shown two sets of paintings, the first by five famous artists and the second by their art student peers. For both sets, they guessed the creators of the works at above-chance levels. In a similar study, creative writing students guessed at above-chance levels which passages were written by which of five famous writers, and which passages were written by which of their writing … Show more

“…There is increasing evidence in support of a non-Darwinian evolutionary theory of creativity, honing theory, according to which creative ideas evolve not by selecting amongst multiple blindly generated variants, as postulated by BVSR, but by actualizing the potential of an ill-defined idea, by observing how it changes state through interaction with sequentially considered contexts or perspectives [35,49,51,103]. The ill-defined idea can be said to be in a 'state of potentiality' because it could actualize different days depending on the different perspectives or contextual cues taken into account as it takes shape.…”

“…If creative output reflects not just chance or expertise but the idiosyncratic process of wrestling with personally meaningful issues to forge an integrated worldview, one might expect that creative individuals may have a characteristic style or 'voice', a distinctive facet of their personality that is recognizable not just within domains but across domains. Empirical support has been obtained for this prediction (Gabora, 2010b;Gabora, O'Connor, & Ranjan, 2012;Ranjan, 2014). Art students were able to identify at significantly above-chance levels which famous artists created pieces of art they had not seen before.…”

“…A la luz de estos resultados, podríamos plantearnos si en el caso de las investigaciones que se han basado en informes de autopercepción (Gabora, 2010;Kaufman & Baer, 2004;Tsai, 2014), pudiera ser que los propios participantes asocien determinados tipos de tareas con ámbitos o dominios específicos. Pensamos que probablemente se asocia el dominio con el tipo de tareas que más lo define.…”
