“…Furthermore, invasive lionfish were first recorded in Veracruz in the past four years (Santander-Monsalvo et al 2012) and its populations may expand to threatening levels if culling is not employed. The Veracruz Reef System is internationally recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and has been designated as a national park since 1992; however, no effective management plan is in place and the Mexican government recently reconfigured the boundaries of the park to expand operations of the Port of Veracruz onto part of the reef (Ortiz-Lozano et al 2013).
