“…Tissue culture companies can play an important role in the project, as the application of meristem culture can keep lilies free from LSV (Asjes et al 1974;Van Aartrijk & Blom-Barnhoorn, 1978), and TBV (Blom- Barnhoorn & Van Aartrijk, 1985). LVX does not frequently occur, so usually LVX-free starting material can be selected.…”

“…Adenine arabinoside at 10mg1-1 and higher, completely retarded the growth of the meristems. Simpkins et al (1981) and Blom-Barnhoorn & Van Aartrijk (1985) Table I. Average number of Ornithogalurn cv.…”

“…Four different viruses were then eliminated from the plants. Likewise, Klein & Livingstone (1982) and Blom-Barnhoorn & Van Aartrijk (1985) found that the addition of Virazole (ribavirin) aided the elimination of viruses from potatoes and lilies respectively. There is, however, no known chemical method for totally eliminating viruses from bulbous plants while other treatments such as heat only seem to reduce the virus concentration (Bertaccini et al 1989).…”

“…The elimination of LSV was achieved in Lilium × elegans and L. longiflorum by tissue culture in early excision of shoots regenerated from scale pieces , meristematic tip culture Nesi et al, 2009), and meristematic tip (Nesi et al, 2009) or callus (Xu et al, 2000) culture in combination with thermotherapy. Meristematic tip culture was also used to eliminate Tulip breaking virus (TBV), which is genetically almost identical to LMoV, in L. longiflorum (Blom-Barnhoorn and van Aartrijk, 1985). Ozaki et al (1996) and Xu et al (2000) were successful in eradicating CMV in L. longiflorum through chemotherapy or in combination with callus culture.…”
