The relationship between emergence from spawning gravel and growth in farmed rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss

Abstract: The relationship between the timing of emergence from spawning gravel and growth after emergence was investigated in farmed Oncorhynchus mykiss. A relationship between the time of emergence and growth became evident after 6 months of rearing, where individuals with an intermediate emergence time had grown larger compared with early and late emerging individuals.

“…Interestingly, it appears that the middle fraction possesses the best mix of characteristics; it has the behavioural reluctance of the late emerging fraction, the reduced stress sensitivity of the early emergers, and an intermediate routine metabolism. The overall result is an increased willingness to feed, which lends support to earlier work on juvenile rainbow trout (Andersson et al, 2013b).…”

“…Finally, it should be noted that an increasing number of studies also report that contrasting coping styles in fish are reflected in somatic and morphological traits such as developmental rate (Andersson et al . , ,b) and pigmentation patterns (Kittilsen et al . ,b, ; Bäckström et al .…”

“…Recently, Andersson et al . () reported a coupling between stress‐coping styles and the time to reach first feeding (low cortisol responders had larger yolk reserves at emergence time) which can be used as a proxy.…”

“…While some studies of juvenile salmonids have demonstrated that fitness and life-history strategies may be linked to individual differences in behavioural traits [ 25 , 33 35 ], others have been unable to document such relationships [ 36 , 37 ]. Moreover, it has been suggested that behavioural characteristics associated with spawning nest emergence can affect growth and timing of smoltification (seawater adaptation) in salmonids reared under hatchery conditions [ 25 , 38 ]. However, it remains unknown if such relationships persist in natural habitats, where environmental complexity is higher and there are more dynamic ecological factors influencing selection such as competition, predation, and resource availability.…”
