The relationship between emotional intelligence and the dark triad personality traits: A meta-analytic review

Abstract: This is a meta-analysis of emotional intelligence (EI) and Dark Triad traits. EI is significantly and negatively related to Machiavellianism (overall EI: ρ̅̂ = -0.29; ability EI: ρ̅̂ = -0.31; trait EI: ρ̅̂ = -0.27) and to psychopathy (overall EI: ρ̅̂ = -0.17; ability EI: ρ̅̂ = -0.21; trait EI: ρ̅̂ = -0.16). EI is not related to narcissism (overall EI: ρ̅̂ = 0.02; ability EI: ρ̅̂ = -0.10; trait EI: ρ̅̂ = 0.05). The types of EI did not moderate the relationships between EI and Dark Triad traits. EI measures and … Show more

“…For instance, Wai and Tiliopoulos (2012) found a positive relation with the recognition of angry faces and Konrath et al (2014) identified exploitativeness (as facet of narcissism) as positive predictor of the recognition of negative emotions. Also, a recent meta-analytic investigation revealed that only Machiavellianism and psychopathy negatively correlated with both ability and trait EI (Miao et al, 2019). This again indicates the occasional adaptive nature of narcissism and is in line with the conclusion, that narcissism represents the lightest trait among the DT (Rauthmann and Kolar, 2012).…”

“…In recent years, on the basis of an emerging academic literature, a debate has risen about the association between EI and the DT (Jauk et al, 2016). Studies tend to show a negative association between EI and some DTs (Miao et al, 2019). Other studies, which are rarer but have received considerable media coverage (Bariso, 2018;Cummins, 2014), have revealed a positive link between EI and some DTs, often focusing on one or more subdimensions of EI, for instance the ability to regulate emotions (Côté et al, 2011;Davis & Nichols, 2016).…”
