The Relationship Between Pulmonary Function and Physical Function and Mobility in Community-Dwelling Elderly Women Aged 75 Years or Older

Abstract: Abstract.[Purpose] The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between pulmonary function and the physical function and mobility of community-dwelling elderly women aged ≥75 years.[Methods] The subjects were 1,022 women aged ≥75 years who were living in an urban environment. We measured their vital capacity (VC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1.0) by spirometry, and assessed their physical function and mobility.[Results] Older women exhibited inferior pulmonary function as well a… Show more

“…6,7,18 Thus, an extended life-space mobility plays an important role in maintaining health and function in patients following TKA. In this study, the LSA score of 83.1 in the control group was lower than in communitydwelling older adults 22 ; however, the LSA score of 96.3 after the event in the intervention group exceeded the score of 91.8 of community-dwelling older adults in Japan. 22 Therefore, our results suggest that patients approximately 4 months after TKA who participated in the walking event demonstrated better life-space mobility at 5 months after TKA than did community-dwelling older adults.…”

“…Although patients demonstrated most of the changes in strength and functional gains within 6 months after TKA, 11,21 6 months after TKA, patients scored 84.1 on the LSA, 12 which was lower than the score of community-dwelling older adults in Japan. 22 Restricted life-space mobility is an important risk factor for the development of frailty, 18 cognitive decline, 3,4 and mortality. 6,7,18 Thus, an extended life-space mobility plays an important role in maintaining health and function in patients following TKA.…”

“…The proportion of victims over 60 years of age, who were exposed to air pollution in the 1960s and are now receiving compensation, reached 43% at the end of March 2012. The pulmonary function of women who had lived in these communities has declined as they have aged, and decline of pulmonary function is associated with a decline in physical function 4 ) . Pulmonary diseases are an increasingly serious problem for officially acknowledged victims of pollution-related illness as they age, a phenomenon that is becoming a major economic and social concern.…”
