The Relevance of Assessing the Cell Proliferation Factor Ki-67 in Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Larynx

Abstract: The aim of study was to investigate the expression of the proliferation factor Ki-67 and its relationship with histological grade, cancer stage, and treatment outcome in squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. Samples from 78 patients with laryngeal cancer were analysed retrospectively. Paraffin sections of tumors were immunohistochemically stained for Ki-67 expression. The patients were divided in two groups according to the proliferative factor values (a low Ki-67 index group - Ki-67≤34 and high Ki-67 index g… Show more

“…Increased cell proliferation may be an adaptive response to an injurious substance [ 26 ]. However, an important feature of laryngeal malignant transformation is the large number and high proliferation rate of dividing cells [ 27 ]. While CS has been shown to induce laryngeal epithelial hyperplasia [ 28 , 29 ], very few studies have directly investigated proliferating cells in response to CSE.…”

“… CircABCB10 enhances invasion and migration of LSCC cells. [ 5 ] The AMC-HN-8 and Hep-2 cells were treated with control shRNA or circABCB10 shRNA. ( A and B ) The cell migration and invasion were determined by transwell assays in the cells.…”

“…Surgery and radiotherapy are broadly used, and chemotherapy is applied in several curative approaches [ 3 , 4 ]. The high rate of LSCC recurrence is usually caused by chemotherapy resistance and high invasiveness [ 5 , 6 ]. Consequently, it is required for the profoundly comprehend the mechanisms of LSCC progression and carcinogenesis for the development of more efficient therapeutic strategies.…”

“…We first began by assessing ESRP1 protein levels, as well as those of the widely used proliferative index Ki-67 [18], in 44 archived paraffin-embedded human cervical carcinoma tissue samples via immunohistochemical staining (Figure 1). We observed high and low ESRP1 protein levels of 38.6% (17/44) and 61.4% (27/44), respectively.…”
