The Reproductive Cycles of Monodonta Lineata and Gibbula Umbilicalis on the Coast of Mid-Wales

Abstract: At Aberaeron, Dyfed, mid-Wales, the two trochid species, Monodonta lineata and Gibbula umbilicalis breed during the summer months. M. lineata showed a discrete spawning period in late July in both 1980 and 1983, whilst G. umbilicalis spawned in August in both years, though with gamete release prolonged into September in 1980. In both species gonad development begins in April/May, and by June the characteristic bimodal oocyte diameter distribution of mature females has been established. Vitellogenesis and the d… Show more

“…The presence of a phenological shift is supported by observations of earlier onset of gametogenesis in several rocky shore invertebrates (including G. umbilicalis) during the warmer spring temperatures observed in several recent years in northern Europe. Spawning events seem to be taking place two months earlier in spring in comparison with the summer spawning event observed in cooler years of the late 1960s and early 1980s (Underwood 1972, Garwood and Kendall 1985. Note: The r s values presented correspond to the 50th percentile of the 5000 bootstrapped estimations of the association between the differenced NAO indices and observed recruitment from the literature.…”

“…commun. ), Bowman (1985), Garwood & Kendall(1985) and from papers in this volume by Bode Extension of the period of gonad activity overall or of the period of 'ripeness' does not necessarily mean that spawning is taking place over an equally extended time, either continuously or in short bursts. Spawning which occurs as synchronously as it does in Patella spp (Bowman, 1985) or Gibbula (Kendall, pers.…”

“…Although a great deal of biological information has been published about topshells, virtually no data are available about their behavior (Clarke, Kendall, & Gore, 1990;Daguzan, 1991;Garwood & Kendall, 1985;Little, Dicks, & Crothers, 1986;Underwood, 1973;Williamson & Kendall, 1981). We therefore designed an experiment to answer the following question : Is the topshell (Monodonta lineata) capable oflearning not to extend its foot for suction on a surface and then able to store this learned inhibition in long-term memory?…”
