The Ridgeway Conglomerate Formation of SW Wales, and its implications. The end of the Lower Old Red Sandstone?

Abstract: The Devonian Old Red Sandstone Ridgeway Conglomerate Formation crops out in Pembrokeshire, SW Wales. It was deposited as part of a dryland alluvial fan, axial fluvial valley deposystem. It conformably overlies the mid Lochkovian Freshwater West Formation and probably predates deposition of the Lower Cosheston Group Mill Bay Formation indicating an Early Devonian (latest Lochkovian to earliest Pragian) age, rather than a Middle Devonian age as suggested by previous workers. It therefore represents the youngest … Show more

“…Burrowing possibly represents a depauperate Scoyenia ichnofacies (Buatois & Mángano, 2004). Similar deposits are observed in interpreted fan toe reaches of the ORS Ridgeway Conglomerate Formation (Hillier & Williams, 2007) and from ephemeral ORS floodplain lakes (e.g. Marriott & Wright, 2004).…”

“…The Skolithos burrows may infer opportunistic arthropod tracemakers (insects or arachnids) in moist softground sediment (see discussion below). Similar deposits are common in Siluro‐Devonian continental successions of the UK, for example, see Tunbridge (1981), Williams & Hillier (2004), Hillier & Williams (2007).…”

“…Rare, massive, matrix-supported conglomerates may be indicative of infrequent high-density, hyperconcentrated flows that display characteristics of both non-cohesive debris flows and sheet floods (Benvenuti & Martini 2002;Hartley et al 2005). Comparable deposits to those present in facies associations B and C have been described from, for example, the Devonian Old Red Sandstone of Wales (Turnbridge 1984;Hillier & Williams 2007), the Triassic Chinle Formation in the USA (DeLuca & Eriksson 1989) and the Cretaceous of Korea (Sohn et al 1999) and are attributed to deposition on alluvial fans.…”

“…, 2005; Wright & Marriott, 2007; Hillier et al. , 2007; Hillier & Williams, 2007). The Old Red Sandstone successions have an abundance of mud that formed pelleted aggregates during pedogenesis and subsequently was eroded, transported and deposited as bedload (Wright & Marriott, 2007).…”

“…The Ridgeway Conglomerate Formation (Hillier & Williams, 2007) was laid down in an alluvial fan and braided‐river setting. Of particular note is a sand matrix in the clast‐supported conglomerates, as well as matrix‐supported conglomerates, interbeds of mudstone and sandstone and conglomerate‐sandstone couplets.…”
