The Risk of Emerging of Dengue Fever in Romania, in the Context of Global Warming

Abstract: (1) Background: Few studies to date have assessed the influences induced by climate change on the spatial distribution and population abundance of Aedes albopictus using the latest climate scenarios. In this study, we updated the current distribution of Ae. albopictus mosquitoes and evaluated the changes in their distribution under future climate conditions, as well as the risk of dengue virus emergence in Romania. (2) Methods: Under the two scenarios: High scenario (HS) when no drastic measures to reduce the … Show more

“…In Romania, since the mid-1980s, extremely high values for summer thermal stress that indicates an increased risk to human health during summers (Climate Change Post 2023). Another aspect is the risk of infectious diseases spreading beyond tropical regions to temperate zones, for example "dengue fever, Chagas, leishmaniasis, Chikungunya, schistoso-miasis" (Ivanescu 2023). Climate change effects' health risks are mostly affecting vulnerable categories of people like children, pregnant women, elderly people and people with chronic conditions and people from disadvantaged areas with poor access to financial means, medical aid and other social services.…”

“…During the first months of 2024, several countries and territories of Latin America have reported an unprecedented surge in dengue cases. Furthermore, reports of dengue virus infection and autochthonous transmission are rapidly becoming an increasing concern in countries in mainland Europe, presumably due to the changing climate and thereby altered territory of dengue virus vectors ( 3 , 4 ). As of 2022, the World Health Organization estimates that approximately 100-400 million infections occur per year, although over 80% of those are mild and asymptomatic ( 1 ).…”

“…Uno de los vectores que ha generado más preocupación en los últimos años, dada su rápida dispersión y fácil adaptabilidad, es el "mosquito tigre asiático" Aedes albopictus 3 , 4 . Originario del sureste asiático, es considerado actualmente como el mosquito más invasivo del mundo y es catalogado como uno de los vectores con mayor dispersión geográfica en las últimas dos décadas 5 .…”
