The Robust Learning Model (RLM): A Comprehensive Approach To A New Online University

Abstract: This paper outlines the components of the Robust Learning Model (RLM) as a conceptual framework for creating a new online university offering numerous degree programs at all degree levels. The RLM is a multi-factorial model based on the basic belief that successful learning outcomes depend on multiple factors employed together in a holistic approach. This comprehensive approach was fully implemented and resulted in quality learning at all degree levels, affordable tuition, and accountability.

“…Newman et al, in their extensive studies on students' learning and academic achievement in the 1990s, extracted several factors related to the quality of learning experiences affecting performance and academic outcomes (durability, graduation, academic satisfaction, and commitment to education) (23). According to Newman, the quality of learning experiences is influenced by the content of education, resources, curriculum flexibility, and the quality of teacher-student relations.…”

“…Integrated technology-based models such as the Robust Learning Model by Neumann & Neumann (2010) and the classroom technology implementation model (Hamlin, Griffy-Brown & Goodrich, 2003;Hamlin, 2015) have defined critical factors needed for developing and delivering instructional technology with the aim of creating a high-level learning environment. Education in the professions that capitalizes on situated learning principles requires teaching methods that integrate technology, cognitive apprenticeships and supports transformative learning methods with the goal of creating reflective practitioners.…”

“…Methods for producing reflection such as transformative learning (Kitchenham, 2008), cognitive apprenticeships (Benner & Sutphen, 2007) and expansive learning (Engeström & Sannino, 2010) have been proposed as pedagogical solutions to train the reflective practitioner. Others have proposed models for integrating instructional technology systems into the curriculum (Hamlin, Griffy-Brown & Goodrich, 2003;Neumann & Neumann, 2010). The integration of technology into the health science curriculum requires a systematic approach that addresses the unique nature and requirements of health science education.…”

“…The integration of technology into the health science curriculum requires a systematic approach that addresses the unique nature and requirements of health science education. The design framework of such a system must address the needs for faculty to provide and students to experience transformative learning events, while at the same time delivering increased student support, outcomes assessment and continuous quality improvement leading to increased organizational and educational effectiveness (Neumann & Neumann, 2010).…”
