The Role and Limits of Principles in AI Ethics

Abstract: The last few years have seen a proliferation of principles for AI ethics. There is substantial overlap between different sets of principles, with widespread agreement that AI should be used for the common good, should not be used to harm people or undermine their rights, and should respect widely held values such as fairness, privacy, and autonomy. While articulating and agreeing on principles is important, it is only a starting point. Drawing on comparisons with the field of bioethics, we highlight some of th… Show more

“…However, broad principles fall short of dictating specific actions in practice. Indeed, it has been acknowledged that these ethical frameworks do not provide enough contextual guidance for engineers to make use of them (e.g., [10], [14], and [22]). For example, the principle of fairness could lead to affirmative action, providing extra support for a group, or not, depending on the context.…”

“…But unlike medical ethics, which is guided by the common aim of promoting the health of the patient, AI development does not share one common goal but many goals (Mittelstadt, 2019). Furthermore, many of these AI ethics principles are at tension with each other (Whittlestone et al, 2019). For instance, how does one improve the accuracy of algorithmic predictions while ensuring fair and equal treatment of those impacted by the algorithm?…”

“…Moreover, different stakeholders may comprise of decision makers from different disciplines and require the research protocol to be communicated at differing levels of abstraction to ensure adequate comprehension. This issue of communication between disciplines and the potential for misinterpretation is highlighted in a recent Nuffield Foundation report 46…”
