The Role of Appraisal in Adapting to Information Systems

Abstract: The benefits of new organizational information systems (IS) depend on the degree that users of the technology adapt by proactively changing themselves, their work routines, and even the technology itself in order to leverage its strategic capabilities. Scholars have recently proposed the Coping Model of User Adaptation (CMUA) as a useful theoretical lens for understanding individual adaptive responses to an IS; however, this nascent model has not yet received extensive empirical validation. Using survey data… Show more

“…Fadel [16] investigated the relationship between adaptation strategies and IS infusion. Problem-focused adaptation, which refers to efforts to change one's self or change the environment (functionalities and features of IS), positively influences IS infusion [17]. According to Fadel [17], emotion-focused coping acts include positive reappraisal and distancing/avoidance.…”

“…Threatened individuals exhibit resistant behaviors meant to push back against the threat source (e.g., the ES), thereby jeopardizing ES implementation success (Kim & Kankanhalli, 2009;Rivard & Lapointe, 2012). Voluntary turnover is a visibly-assertive and selfpreserving behavior often employed as a last resort by individuals who feel unable to adapt to a disruptive event such as an ES implementation (Beaudry & Pinsonneault, 2005;Fadel, 2012). Turnover intentions, which form in the time leading up to voluntary turnover, are shaped by the success or failure of an individual's own coping strategies enacted to neutralize these threats (Mai, Ellis, Christian, & Porter, 2016).…”
