The Role of Constructiveness in Interparental Conflict for Mothers' Perception of Children's Health

Abstract: Objective To examine how constructiveness in interparental conflict affects mothers' perception of children's psychological and physical health and whether coparenting and positive parenting mediate these effects. Background Children exposed to high levels of interparental conflict are at elevated risk of developing health problems. However, previous research suggests that constructive and destructive interparental conflict may affect children's health differently. Method Mothers (n = 289) with at least one ch… Show more

“…Additionally, psychological factors may be influenced by other factors surrounding youth's life. For instance, Zemp et al [65] suggest that children's psychological health may be influenced by the type of relation between the parents; parental emotional availability and peer relationships are also attributed to an essential role in the construction of a positive mindset [66]. Furthermore, some authors propose that even physical pathologies may play a role in it [67].…”

“…In support of this assertion, constructive IPC was shown to predict parental warmth (McCoy et al, 2009, 2013) as well as less inconsistent discipline, less unsupportive reactions, and less psychological control for mothers and fathers (Warmuth et al, 2020). Constructive IPC appears to be unrelated to positive parenting in Western culture (Coln et al, 2013; Du Rocher Schudlich & Cummings, 2007; Zemp et al, 2020), but in Japanese culture, constructive IPC correlated with maternal positive parenting (Hosokawa & Katsura, 2017). Possibly due to cultural differences in parenting, children in non‐Western cultures may particularly benefit when mothers use constructive management strategies.…”
