The Role of Crop Protection in Sustainable Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) Production to Alleviate Global Starvation Problem: An Overview

Abstract: Among food crops in terms of consumption, potato ranks fourth, most important and valuable crop worldwide in terms of production and area harvested after maize, wheat and rice. In the coming years, potato production must keep pace with global population expansion nutritiously and sustainably which can partially be achieved by reducing the yield losses caused by the destructive pest and disease activities to the crop. The challenge of 70–80% total microbial crop yield loss posed by pathogens must be addressed f… Show more

“…Globally, potato is produced in over 155 countries, contributing nutritional value for more than a billion people [ 4 , 5 ]. Even though the global production is one-half that of wheat, rice, and maize, its production has increased by one-fifth since 1990, while its consumption has increased by more than double in developing countries [ 5 , 6 ]. In 2021, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimated global potato yield to be 20.7 tonnes/hectare (t/ha), cultivated on about 18.2 million hectares (Mha) of land.…”

“…The potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) belongs to the Solanaceae family, originated in South America circa 500 B.C [1], and is the fourth most widely grown crop in the world [2]. Global potato production reached 367.75 million tones [3].…”

“…The potato ( Solanum tuberosum ) is currently the fourth most important crop after rice, wheat, and corn. It plays a relevant role in global nutrition and for the sustainable development goals of the United Nations related to zero hunger and feed security ( FAO, 2008 ; Ahmadu et al., 2021 ; FAOSTAT, 2022 ). The crop has become increasingly relevant due to population growth and the need to increase the supply of healthy food especially in developing regions such as Africa and Latin America.…”
