The role of different sliding resistances in limit analysis of hemispherical masonry domes

Abstract: A limit analysis method for masonry domes composed of interlocking blocks with non-isotropic sliding resistance is under development. This paper reports the first two steps of that work. It first introduces a revision to an existing limit analysis approach using the membrane theory with finite hoop stresses to find the minimum thickness of a hemispherical dome under its own weight and composed of conventional blocks with finite isotropic friction. The coordinates of an initial axisymmetric membrane surface are… Show more

“…This work focus the attention on the study of the ultimate behaviour of masonry arches of different geometries and shape, considering the presence of friction, considered by several authors (Ferris and Tin-Loi, 2001;Mousavian and Casapulla, 2020;Portioli et al, 2014;Casapulla and Maione, 2020), and comparing results with several contributes present in literature (Brandonisio et al, 2017;Calderini and Lagomarsino, 2015;Como, 2015;Misseri et al, 2018;DeJong et al, 2008). In particular, starting from (Baggio and Trovalusci, 2000), a new version of the ALMA code (Analisi Limite Murature Attritive) has been developed based on the Limit Analysis (Pepe, 2020;Pepe et al, 2019Pepe et al, , 2020a namely ALMA 2.0.…”

“…One straightforward example is a hemispheric dome with stacked and running bond patterns. Carrying its self-weight, the former should have at least the minimum thickness-to-radius ratio of 0.0425 according to [15], while the latter can remain stable with a thickness close to zero if the friction coefficient at the joints is considered large enough [15,16]. Along the same line, the structural performance of different types of masonry vaults, including cross-vaults, barrel vaults and domes, constructed by bond patterns such as running bond and herringbone patterns, have been extensively investigated in the literature, as reviewed by Boni et al [17].…”

“…Similarly, experimental and numerical investigations were carried out on the different behaviour of wooden joinery connections with different geometric properties [23][24][25][26]. A digital tool to design structurally feasible masonry structures composed of interlocking blocks has been developed by some of the presenting authors [27][28][29].…”
