The Role of Environment and Management on Leg Abnormalities in Meat-Type Fowl

Abstract: Continuous light with 1 h of darkness at midnight is a common photoperiod for raising meat-type fowl. The logic behind the 1 h of darkness, usually provided between midnight and 0100 h, is to acclimate the birds to darkness in the event of a power failure. Increasing evidence from several research laboratories indicates that lighting regimens other than continuous light, such as intermittent or step-up lighting, can lower the incidence of leg abnormalities in meat-type fowl. Some evidence suggests that increas… Show more

“…Leg disorders are a result of infection, developmental and degenerative conditions or combinations of these (Thorp, 1992). The causes of broiler lameness are therefore multifactorial and are affected by management factors and genetic differences between lines (Hester, 1994;Kestin et al, 1999;Reiter and Kutritz, 2001). Whereas modifications to the management of boiler chickens such as shorter photoperiods and limiting early growth rate may decrease the prevalence of skeletal disorders (Classen, 1992), genetic selection to decrease the propensity to develop skeletal disease will protect boiler chickens from these conditions and simplify management.…”

“…Leg problems can result in a loss of 0·5% to 5% of a ock during the growing period and in the downgrading of carcases. Furthermore, there is increasing concern about the handling of broilers during catching and loading (Julian, 1986;Hester, 1994).…”
