The Role of Graphene Oxide Nanocarriers in Treating Gliomas

Abstract: Gliomas are the most common primary malignant tumors of the central nervous system, and their conventional treatment involves maximal safe surgical resection combined with radiotherapy and temozolomide chemotherapy; however, this treatment does not meet the requirements of patients in terms of survival and quality of life. Graphene oxide (GO) has excellent physical and chemical properties and plays an important role in the treatment of gliomas mainly through four applications, viz. direct killing, drug deliver… Show more

“…One of them is GO's effectiveness and safety which need further research. Among the reasons for the poor effectiveness of GO is its tendency to aggregate under physiological conditions [235,236]. The lack of enough stability in the biological medium can hinder cancer photothermal therapy using GO-based materials.…”

“…Surface modifications alter GO's physical and chemical properties and biocompatibility and, thus, can improve the drug carrier and photothermal efficiency. Covalent modifications of GO often require multistep chemical reactions, which may affect the activity of biomolecules, unlike noncovalent modification, which is a simpler process [235,237]. Various polymers have been used for the functionalisation of GO and have been shown to improve the colloidal stability, cytotoxicity and size distribution, as well as biocompatibility and cellular uptake [238].…”

“…Inorganic nanoparticles have drawn much attention for drug delivery to specific sites since they have a high specific surface area and a surface that is easily chemically modified [ 176 ], providing a reliable platform for siRNA delivery. At present, the commonly used inorganic nanocarriers include gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) [ 177 ], graphene oxide (GO) [ 178 ], carbon nanotubes [ 179 ], and mesoporous silica [ 180 ].…”
