The role of HVDC voltage waveforms on partial discharge activity in paper/oil insulation

Abstract: This paper discusses the role of high voltage direct current (HVDC) voltage waveforms on partial discharge (PD) activity in paper/oil insulation systems. A variety of voltages were simulated by the PSIM software and synthesized using a high voltage amplifier. Kraft paper sheets were used to create defects incepting PD. The PD signals were coupled by a high frequency ferrite core current transformer. PD quantities including PD inception voltage (PDIV), pattern, amplitude distribution and repetition rate were re… Show more

“…Some technical challenges to include local temperature rises in restricted spaces, combined action of DC and AC voltages, severe distortion of electric field, partial discharge, magnetic vibration, noise reduction, and transportation difficulties must be addressed in developing ±1100 kV converter transformers [57]. Following successful development and manufacturing of ±800 kV converter transformers, researchers have conducted much research on ±1100 kV converter transformers [58–62]. Research indicates that the optimised arrangement sequence of UHV converter transformers can make it easier to implement the vertical outlet line at the end of grid side.…”

“…Concerning the principles and the mechanisms of PD under DC fields, remarkable investigations have been carried out [8,9], but the operational nature of HVDC systems introduces some challenges: harmonic injection that appears in the form of ripples in the DC side of the converters influences cable insulation [10]. Some recent studies have focused on PD activity under abnormal conditions that could be imposed by the operational conditions of HVDC equipment, through modelling [11,12] and experimental tests [13,14]. Moreover, cable insulation is influenced by the normal polarity reversal operation of Line Commuted Converters (LCC); this might be due to accumulation of space charges under the effect of DC electric fields [15][16][17] that result in locally intensified fields within the cable insulation.…”

“…Introduction UHVDC transmission projects of a higher voltage level, such as 1,100 kV, are being planned in China (Pu et al, 2015). Both converter transformers and smoothing reactors are important Stray-field loss and flux distribution 1715 devices in UHVDC transmission system (Jiang et al, 2012;Cheng et al, 2008). In the light of the particularity of working conditions (Atkinson-Hope et al, 2012), a large number of harmonics flow into the windings of smoothing reactors (e.g.…”
