THE ROLE OF NOSTALGIA IN (RE)CREATING PLACE ATTACHMENTS FOR A DIASPORIC COMMUNITY

Abstract: The concept of nostalgia implies a level of romanticization of a place or time period, a selective "remembering" of a place held in the imagination of an individual or group of people. These imaginings produce a narrative that both extends place attachments to other community members, and potentially create shared myths of place. We use the Mongolian Kazakh population as a case study of how, over time, strong place attachments evolve into placebased narratives of home and identity for diasporic communities. We… Show more

“…The research provides a understanding of how destination attachment shapes tourists' perceptions and behaviors, representing a substantial contribution to the literature on potential tourist behaviors and a more sophisticated method for examining advocacy intentions in scenic Emotional solidarity and tourists' nostalgia destinations (Barcus and Shugatai, 2021;Cho, 2021;Dwyer et al, 2019;Ganji et al, 2021). This understanding aids in developing strategic approaches for destination marketers to tap into the power of nostalgia, thus increasing tourists' intentions to advocate for the destination.…”

“…Indeed, homeland tourism is often strongly supported through visiting friends and relatives (VFR) travel (Butler, 2003;King and Dwyer, 2015;Wagner, 2015;Rogerson, 2017), as well as heritage and roots tourism (Reed, 2013(Reed, , 2015Pelliccia, 2016). These connections are further reinforced through business relations and investment by diasporas in their home country (Elo and Riddle, 2016;Tichaawa, 2017;Williams, 2018;Rabbiosi et al, 2019), remittances to the homeland (Leblang, 2016;Busumtwi-Sam, 2019;Galstyan and Ambrosini, 2022), the development and maintenance of social capital and community networks (Peck, 2020;Li, 2020;Adinolfi, 2019), and place attachment (Otoo et al, 2021;Barcus and Shugatai, 2022;Diener and Hagen, 2022).…”

“…In geographical terms, the attachment to often marginalized geo-locales (pre-national tribal areas or neighborhoods) abet both processes of definition-the external and the internal. In the contemporary migration and diaspora literature, ethnic communities are prominently defined in terms of members' collective attachments to their "place of origin", such as those represented by nostalgia for cities of origin and neighborhoods and even streets and households in their pre-migration homelands [4,5]. Nonetheless, moving beyond the perception of migration as a unidirectional, bipolar movement from a homogenous, "sending" country to a hegemonic, "host" country, various spatial metaphors have helped to emphasize the role of social action dynamics and multifocal definitions of ethnic space in contemporary migration literature ([4], p. 28).…”
