The Role of Inflammatory Diet and Vitamin D on the Link between Periodontitis and Cognitive Function: A Mediation Analysis in Older Adults

Abstract: Patients suffering from periodontitis are at a higher risk of developing cognitive dysfunction. However, the mediation effect of an inflammatory diet and serum vitamin D levels in this link is unclear. In total, 2062 participants aged 60 years or older with complete periodontal diagnosis and cognitive tests from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2012 and 2013–2014 were enrolled. The Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s disease (CERAD) word learning subtest (WLT) a… Show more

“…The cognitive function of older participants (aged 60 or over) was estimated using four tests [ 35 , 36 ]: (1) the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease (CERAD) test, (2) the animal fluency test, (3) the digit symbol substitution test (DSST), and (4) the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease (CERAD) delayed recall test. The four tests are widely used in cohort studies to estimate memory, language, speech, and cognitive functions and to screen risk factors [ 37 , 38 , 39 ].…”

“…In some instances, associations have been also revealed with factors such as the composition of the oral microbiota (Jockel-Schneider et al, 2021 ; Li et al, 2021 ). Diet has also been related to inflammation in periodontitis (Woelber et al, 2017 ; Kotsakis et al, 2018 ; Botelho et al, 2021 ; Rowińska et al, 2021 ) and other conditions as disparate as cancer (Deng et al, 2017 ; De Almeida et al, 2019 ), diabetes (Prana et al, 2019 ; Jafaripour et al, 2020 ), cardiovascular diseases (Razquin and Martinez-Gonzalez, 2019 ; Kovell et al, 2020 ), Alzheimer's disease (McGrattan et al, 2019 ), depression (Koopman and El Aidy, 2017 ), and even COVID-19 (Iddir et al, 2020 ).…”

“…On the other hand, nutrition has an impact upon oral health, particularly dietary sugars, acidic food and drinks, and eating behaviors that increase the risk for caries and dental erosion [ 5 ]. Our group recently disclosed the potential association of dietary inflammatory load with periodontitis [ 6 , 7 ], and this has never been assessed in elite athletes.…”
