1. The upper Dniester River basin (Black Sea basin) contains unique fish assemblages.Although data on the fish of the basin are scarce, evidence indicates that these assemblages have declined. It was assumed that the peripheral basins (i.e. small basins on the edge of the larger basin) of the upper Dniester River basin could maintain good ecological status. To fill the knowledge gaps and assess the role of peripheral basins on fish species and assemblage conservation, research was conducted in the Strwiąż River basin. Data from theStrwiąż basin and the adjacent but unconnected upper Wiar basin (the Vistula basin; Baltic Sea basin) were compared in order to examine the influence of historical factors, and to confirm the unique characteristics of the fish assemblages of the peripheral area of the upper Dniester basin. A detailed analysis of the fish assemblages was performed, the primary morphological characteristics of sites that corresponded to the requirements of the fish assemblages were defined, and the human impacts were identified. 3. The Strwiąż River basin is likely to be the only fragment of the upper Dniester basin with a well-preserved fish assemblage. It features high species richness and numerous native Ponto-Caspian species that function near the edge of their ranges. The extant fish fauna of the Strwiąż River basin can provide a point of reference for other tributaries of the upper Dniester River that are degraded.4. We draw attention to the fact that peripheral basins, which are not usually considered in conservation biogeography, can be important for the protection of fish species and entire fish assemblages. This study provides one of the most convincing arguments for a more detailed investigation of peripheral populations.

The article describes the steps for organizing and conducting the ecological monitoring of surface water in order to shift Ukraine to the European standards in the field of water use and protection. The main water users-pollutants of the Western Bug River basin in the Lviv region were identified. The results of the water samples taken from the control bodies in 2018 were analyzed. A promising way to improve the work of the water basin management of the Western Bug River was proposed.

Sectorial approach for monitoring heavy metal pollution in rivers has failed to report realistic pollution status and associated ecological and human health risks. The increasing spread of heavy metals from different sources and emerging risks to human and environmental health call for reexamining heavy metal pollution monitoring frameworks. Also, the sources, spread, and load of heavy metals in the environment have changed significantly over time, requiring consequent modification in the monitoring frameworks. Therefore, studies on heavy metal monitoring in rivers conducted in the last decade were evaluated for experimental designs, research frameworks, and data presentations. Most studies (∼99%) (i) lacked inclusiveness of all environmental compartments; (ii) focused on "one pollutant -one/two compartment" or sometimes "one pollutant -one compartment -one effect" approach; and (iii) remained "data-rich but information poor." An ecological approach with integrative system thinking is proposed to develop a holistic approach for monitoring river pollution. It is visualized that heavy metal monitoring, risk analyses, and water management must incorporate tracking pollutants in different environmental compartments of a river (water, sediment, and floodplain/bank soil) and consider correlating it with riverbank land use. The systemsbased pollution monitoring and assessment studies will reveal the critical factors that drive heavy metals pollutant movement in ecosystems and associated potential risks to the environment, wildlife, and humans. Also, water quality and pollution indexing tools would help better communicate complex pollution data and associated risks among all stakeholders. Therefore, integrating systems approaches in scientific-and policy-based tools would help sustainably manage the health of rivers, wildlife, and humans.
