The Role of Introversion, Behavioral Inhibition, and Shyness in the Pathogenesis of Social Anxiety Disorder: A Review of the Literature

Abstract

Purpose. To conduct a review of scientific sources on the role of introversion, behavioral inhibition, and shyness in the pathogenesis of social anxiety disorder as modifying factors of personal adaptation to social interaction challenges.Methods. Previous searches related to the topic of the article were done in PubMed, Web-of-Science, and Research Gate using the following criteria: studies published after 2010; studies have linked introversion, behavioral inhibition, and shyness, and social anxiety or social anxiety disorder in particular; studies have examined the role of introversion, behavioral inhibition, and shyness in the pathogenesis of social phobia. The exclusion criteria were studies in which only children participated.Results. Analyzed more than 40 scientific articles, 30 were published after 2010. Selected articles indicate that temperament features (introversion and neuroticism), due to neurobiological bases, show positive correlations with the severity of social anxiety and the manifestation of social anxiety disorder. Signs of behavioral inhibition contribute to the severity of introversion traits and poorer psychosocial functioning. Several studies point to the indirect role of cognitive biases between shyness, behavioral inhibition, social anxiety, and negative correlations with self-esteem, which leads to social anxiety disorder in the case of maladaptation and limited resources.Conclusions. High levels of neuroticism and a tendency to introversion in conditions of social uncertainty contribute to the tendency to interpret neutral aspects of social interaction as threatening. Behavioral inhibition (manifested by social restraint and anxiety in social situations), and the realization of shyness through negative self-esteem, will contribute to the formation of avoidant behavior or rejection of social interactions. That mechanism consolidates maladaptive beliefs about themselves and life situations in the pathogenesis of social anxiety disorder.Key words: social anxiety, neuroticism, avoidant behavior, social withdrawal, dysfunctional cognitive schemes. Мета – провести узагальнений огляд наукових джерел щодо ролі інтроверсії, поведінкової інгібіції та сором’язливості у патогенезі соціального тривожного розладу як модифікуючих факторів адаптації особи до викликів соціальної взаємодії. Методи. Для досягнення мети дослідження здійснено пошук попередніх досліджень за допомогою сервісів PubMed, Web-of-Science та Research Gate із застосуванням таких критеріїв: дослідження, що опубліковані після 2010 року; дослідження, що стосувалися зв’язку інтроверсії, поведінкової інгібіції та сором’язливості та соціальної тривоги чи соціального тривожного розладу зокрема; дослідження, що стосувалися ролі інтроверсії, поведінкової інгібіції та сором’язливості у патогенезі соціальної фобії. Критеріями виключення були дослідження, учасниками яких були лише діти.Результати. Опрацьовуючи таку проблематику, було проаналізовано понад 40 наукових статей, із яких 30 опубліковані після 2010 року. У вибраних статтях вказується, що вроджені особливості темпераменту (інтроверсія та нейротизм), зумовлені нейробіологічними основами, демонструють позитивні кореляції із рівнем вираженості соціальної тривоги та формуванням соціального тривожного розладу. Ознаки поведінкової інгібіції сприяють вираженості рис інтроверсії та гіршому психосоціальному функціонуванню. Низка досліджень вказує на опосередковану роль когнітивних упереджень між сором’язливістю, поведінковою інгібіцією та соціальною тривожністю, а також на негативні кореляції із самооцінкою, що у разі дезадаптації та обмежених ресурсів призводять до соціального тривожного розладу. Висновки. Високий рівень нейротизму та схильність до інтроверсії в умовах соціальної невизначеності сприяє формуванню схильності інтерпретувати нейтральні аспекти соціальної взаємодії як загрозливі. Поведінкова інгібіція (гальмування), що проявлятиметься соціальною стриманістю та тривогою у соціальних ситуаціях, а також реалізація сором’язливості через негативну оцінку себе, сприятиме формуванню уникаючої поведінки чи відмови від соціальних взаємодій, закріплюючи дезадаптивні переконання щодо себе та життєвих ситуацій, що лежать в основі патогенезу соціального тривожного розладу.Ключові слова: соціальна тривога, нейротизм, уникаюча поведінка, соціальне відчуження, дисфункційні когнітивні схеми.
