The Role of Local Agglomeration Economies and Regional Characteristics in Attracting FDI: Italian Evidence

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to test for the importance of local agglomeration externalities in determining inward foreign direct investment (FDI) intensity, viewed as a measure of regional attractiveness to FDI. The links between the degree of FDI inflow penetration into Italy and its determinants at the regional level are examined using alternative fixed effects panel data model specifications, also extended to include spatial effects. It is found that sectoral and regional specificities are relevant in at… Show more

“…From this, Porter (1990) theorised that industrial clusters provide competitive advantage by increasing the static productivity of clustered firms by increasing their innovative capacity. Swann et al (1998), Papalia and Bertarelli (2009), as well as Chen et al (2020) supported this notion that clusters tend to attract more firms, and that innovative activity and output are positively correlated with new firm entry and productivity growth. However, this is limited to the inverted U-shape relationship found between the size of clusters and productivity (Nicolini 2003;Maggioni 2012;Wheeler 2004).…”

“…Local autocorrelation examines the correlation and variability of variables in the local space of a region (for more details about local autocorrelation, please cheek De Jong et al [64] and Papalia and Bertarelli [65]). Global autocorrelation cannot determine the specific spatial clustering characteristics and their significance within the study area, while local spatial autocorrelation can measure the local spatial correlation between each area and its surrounding areas [66].…”

“…The advanced domestic base could then become an important determinant of FDI. The industrial districts would provide it the greater scope of (1) pooling of labor force, infrastructure, and education facilities, (2) low transport and transactions costs-led ease of availability of specialized intermediate good supplies, and (3) access to the pool of technological knowledge (for a review of the related emphases in new economic geography, see, Krugman, 1991; Bui and Preechametta, 2021; for a broader focus, see, Papalia and Bertarelli, 2009; Klimek, 2018).…”
