The role of mast cells in oral squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: The mast cells are initial effective lineage in both humoral and adaptive immunity. They are ubiquitous in skin, mucosa, and in function. They contain biologically essential and dynamic mediators in healthy and harmful conditions of tissue. Mast cell malfunctioning could be attributed to various chronic allergic diseases. Considerately, emerging evidence of mast cell involvement in various cancers shows them to have both positive and negative roles in tumour growth. It mostly indulges in tumour progression and… Show more

“…Chymase has also been observed in gastric [ 69 ], lung [ 70 ], and uterine cervical [ 71 ] cancers. Chymase+ mast cells have also been proposed to play a role in SCC [ 72 , 73 , 74 ], possibly by promoting angiogenesis [ 75 ]. Interestingly, SCC antigen, a serological marker of SCC tumor advancement, has been demonstrated to inhibit chymase and cathepsin G, another bypass of the RAS [ 76 ].…”

“…Mast cells (MCs) form a component of the immune system that play an important role in host defense [1]. MCs represent one of the most versatile cells in the body and in the skin due to their ubiquitous distribution and the plethora of biologically active molecules they produce [2].…”

“…Neutral granule proteases expressed by human MC represent their best phenotypic markers allowing the differentiation of connective tissue MC that contain tryptase (try + MC), chymase (chy + MC) and tryptase/chymase (try + chy + MC). Mucosal MC contains only tryptase (try + MC) [1,[8][9][10]. Besides pre-formed mediators as proteases, histamine, heparin proteoglycan, newly-synthesized mediators can be secreted upon activation, including antimicrobial peptides (cathelicidins) [11].…”

“…To study angiogenesis and mast cells in OSCC, it is common to quantify the immunoexpression of CD31 (platelet endothelial cell adhesion protein) and CD117 (receptor tyrosine kinase protein/proto-oncogene c-Kit) respectively [13,14]. Therefore, in this descriptive study (of a human case series) we evaluate the expression of E-cadherin, Vimentin, CD31, CD117 in OED and OSCC, in comparison with NOM.…”
