The Role of Natural Products in Rheumatoid Arthritis: Current Knowledge of Basic In Vitro and In Vivo Research

Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder affecting a vast variety of the population. The onset of RA as well as the development of systematic immunization is affected by both genetic and environmental risk factors. This review aims to point out the role of natural products in the management of RA, focusing on the reports of basic research (in vitro and animal studies) emphasizing the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties considered in the field of RA. A systematic screening of the relevant li… Show more

“…NSAIDs were best known for inhibiting cyclooxygenases, which produce prostaglandins and thromboxanes. Its anti-inflammatory effects extend far beyond cyclooxygenase inhibition, including the inhibition of the pivotal nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-B) and the induction of certain types of eicosanoids, which reduced pro-inflammatory mediators such as TNF-, IL-1, and IL-6 ( Deligiannidou et al, 2021 ; Pekacar et al, 2021 ; Ladd et al, 2022 ).…”

“…However, these treatments do not provide proper relief for patients, and there is no proper treatment for RA. Research is ongoing to discover new anti-arthritis drugs by designing new phytomedicines with fewer side effects and less toxicity [ 12 ].…”

“…In the Table 1 are presented a few examples of the most referenced compounds in PubMed over the past five years that demonstrate potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. It should be taken into account that the list of natural products that demonstrate potential benefits in the management of RA supported by in vitro and animal studies is too extensive to cover exhaustively, and we direct the readers to other reviews on the topic (for review, see REFs [ 274 , 275 , 276 , 277 , 278 ]).…”
