The role of need fulfillment in relationship functioning and well-being: A self-determination theory perspective.

Abstract: Self-determination theory posits 3 basic psychological needs: autonomy (feeling uncoerced in one's actions), competence (feeling capable), and relatedness (feeling connected to others). Optimal well-being results when these needs are satisfied, though this research has traditionally focused on individual well-being outcomes (e.g., E. L. Deci & R. M. Ryan, 2000). Three studies examined the role of need fulfillment in relationship functioning and well-being. Study 1 found that fulfillment of each need individual… Show more

“…In self-determination theory, this set of three psychological needs is advanced as the vital nutriment for the psychological growth of individuals, their well-being and optimal functioning Patrick, Knee, Canevello, & Lonsbary, 2007). Although basic need satisfaction is typically conceptualized as a higher-order construct referring to the extent to which individuals' overall needs are satisfied, three different needs can be distinguished (Greguras & Diefendorff, 2010;Leroy, Anseel, Gardner, & Sels, in press).…”

“…When individuals are autonomous, they experience their behaviour as an expression of the self and they feel in control of situations (Ryan and Deci 2002). Similar to the asset-based approach's focus on well-being and self-actualisation; the self-determination theory posits that optimal well-being results when the basic psychological needs of competence, relatedness and autonomy are fulfilled (Patrick et al 2007). …”
