The Role of Neurophysiological Biomarkers in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Abstract: Background: Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a highly debilitating psychiatric disorder with a high rate of treatment resistance. Biomarkers for obsessive-compulsive disorder may assist clinicians by predicting response to treatments and prognosis. Objective: To review the literature with regards to two of the more easily ascertainable and relatively inexpensive physiological biomarkers, i.e. heart rate variability and electroencephalography. Methods: Narrative review of the literature. Results: Dec… Show more

“…Published research describes conflicting results, ranging from significantly increased heart rate to no differences between individuals with OCD and healthy controls (Abbott et al, 2017). Olbrich et al (2022) provides evidence of increased sympathetic tone in individuals with OCD, and (Herzog & Brakoulias, 2022) describes the connection between decreased HRV and symptom severity of OCD. Thus, further research on heart rate regulation may play a crucial role in understanding the features of emotion dysregulation in patients with OCD.…”
