The role of resective periodontal surgery in the treatment of furcation defects

Abstract: Resective therapy for the treatment of furcation defects is an essential part of the periodontal therapist's armamentarium. Root resection can successfully treat specific furcation defects that cannot be solved by other surgical and nonsurgical approaches. Complications with these resective procedures are not rare but are usually avoidable when specific endodontic, surgical and restorative guidelines are followed.

“…Because root resection is very technique sensitive and complex, proper case selection is essential [7]. In this case there was sufficient bone support around the remaining roots and sufficient coronal tooth structure as well, therefore, the treatment option of root resection followed by milled metal crown for providing support to the removable partial overdenture was selected.…”

“…17 Root resection is very technique sensitive and complex, so proper case selection is essential. 18 Root separation or resection has been used successfully to retain teeth with furcation involvement. However, there are few disadvantages associated with it.…”

“…Root trunk length and type is the major anatomical variable which makes molars exceptionally liable to periodontal disease 14) . It has been observed that shorter root trunks impacts the pathogenesis and makes the tooth more vulnerable to furcation involvement 15) .…”
