The head of the mathematics department is now recognised to be a key figure in mathematics education in British secondary schools. The demands on this position have been growing over the past two or three decades, leading to stress and problems for the head of mathematics. The two major problems are the perception and fulfilment of the demands of the role. It is argued that these problems are due to a lack of job specification, a lack of management training and the inadequate provision of time for meeting the demands.
