“…After all these years, the concept of “uptake sufficient folic acid to prevent certain birth defects” had been enjoyed popular support, and women had handy accesses to acquire free folic acid if they were ready or already for pregnancy. As folic acid supplement has been demonstrated to be a protective factor for OFCs in many studies (Butali et al, ; Figueiredo et al, ; Li et al, ), this public health project might partly contribute to the decreasing of OFCs birth prevalence in Bao'an district.…”

“…33 These mechanisms include maternal psychosocial factors (e.g., stress and anxiety), dietary factors, and prenatal care and may be relevant for disparities in CL6P risk. 34,35 Although these mechanisms may also underlie the association between individual SEP and CL6P risk, neighborhood SEP may also capture aspects of social inequality that have been shown to be associated with adverse health outcomes. 14,36 Our results should be considered in light of certain limitations.…”

“…Adequate maternal periconceptional folate intake and folic acid supplementation play a fundamental role during pregnancy. Folate is involved in cell division, embryogenesis, and fetal growth (Lucock, ) and its deficiency is associated with birth defects (BD) such as neural tube defects (Berry et al, ; Czeizel, Dobo, & Vargha, ), cardiac defects (Czeizel et al, ), and cleft lip palate (Figueiredo et al, ). Therefore, an adequate folate supply through the placenta is crucial for the embryo and fetal development.…”
