PurposeIn the digital age, the development of students’ career intentions requires serious concentration since these are associated with the students’ future employment and, ultimately, their survival. This study attempted to demonstrate in Pakistan’s Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs) the role of soft skills towards the students' career development (CD) and their future career intentions (CI).Design/methodology/approachIn this study, the researchers used a quantitative approach and a questionnaire to collect the data from the surveyed participants. Finally, the researchers based this study’s findings on 392 useable samples.FindingsBy employing the structural equation model (SEM), this study’s findings show that soft skills, such as Creative Self-Efficacy (CSE), Problem-Solving Confidence (PSC) and Teamwork (TW) have a positive and significant effect on CD and CI. However, while Critical thinking and Creativity (CRC) has a positive and significant effect on CD, it has no effect on CI. In addition, this study’s findings confirm, also, that CD has a positive and significant effect on CI.Practical implicationsThis study’s findings assist policymakers and university administrators to understand the importance of soft skills in creating CD and CI. These promote the development of employability skills and fulfill its part in preparing graduates for the unpredictable job market. This study’s findings help, also, to develop logical reasoning in making decisions and in dealing with complex organizational issues.Originality/valueIn a practical way, in Pakistan, this study’s findings confirm the role of soft skills towards students' CD and CI.

In the career selection process of high school students, previous research has shown that career decision self-efficacy can be predicted from thinking styles. However, the self-efficacy of career decisions can differ between men and women. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to look at the role of gender as a moderator in the relationship of thinking styles with the self-efficacy of career decisions of high school students. The number of respondents in this study were 353 high school students. Furthermore, the variables were measured using a research questionnaire namely the Career Decision Self-Efficacy-Short Form (CDSE-SF) scale and Thinking Style Inventory-Revised II (TSI-R2) which had been adapted into Indonesian. Data were analyzed using PROCESS macros program from Hayes that contained in SPSS. The results show that gender can only moderate the relationship of type I thinking styles with career decision self-efficacy in senior high school students (b3 = -0,24, t=-2,51, p<0,05); while gender doesn’t become a moderator in the relationship of type II thinking styles with career decision self-efficacy of high school student (b3 = -0,12, t=-1,28, p>0,5). Limitation and suggestions for further research are discussed.

Modern knowledge‐intensive industrial production technologies increase the demand for engineering personnel in the labour market which actualises the problem of training competent, highly qualified specialists. This process is strongly determined by the motives that guide future engineers in their professional learning activities. The study analyses the dynamics of professional motivation of technical students of I–III courses. This study presents the results of research conducted by assessing the professional motivations of students at the Norilsk State Industrial Institute. The survey was conducted by the authors in September–October 2020. Fourteen motives were assessed and grouped into seven groups: social, moral, collectivist, cognitive, material, prestige motivation, and those associated with the peculiarities of professional activity. The study of professional motivation helped to identify the dominant motives of future engineers, trace their dynamics among students of different courses and analyse the peculiarity of professional motivation of students of different technical training areas. Based on the results of the study and analysis of the data obtained in the structure of future engineers’ professional motivation, the dominance of social, material and moral motivations, growth of collectivist and cognitive motives, insufficient degree of cognitive and work‐related motivation, low level of assessment of the prestige of the chosen profession are stated. The comparative data presented in the study with the 2009–2010 academic year's research on professional motivation identifies the need for further systematic vocational guidance work with future engineers.
