The Role of Torovirus in Nosocomial Viral Gastroenteritis at a Large Tertiary Pediatric Centre

Abstract: Torovirus remains the most commonly identified cause of NVG at The Hospital for Sick Children. Most NVG cases were epidemiologically linked, and a significant reduction in cases occurred after the institution of enhanced infection control practices following an outbreak of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus. Improved education and surveillance for NVG should lead to further reduction in this problem.

“…Torovirus infection is associated with diarrhea [ 34 ] and is more frequently observed in immuno-compromised patients and in nosocomial infected individuals [ 34 ]. Retrospective analysis of nosocomial viral gastroenteritis in a pediatric hospital revealed that in 67% of the cases torovirus could be detected [ 35 ]. However, only a limited number of studies report the detection of torovirus and therefore the true pathogenesis and prevalence of this virus remains elusive.…”

“…In another study, Torovirus was detected as the predominant virus in nosocomial viral gastroenteritis in Canada (31). Similarly, Gubbay et al (17) stated that 67% of 133 children with gastroenteritis were found to be positive for Torovirus in Toronto, Canada. Rotarovirus (19%) and Adenovirus (9%) were detected as the other predominant viruses after Torovirus, respectively.…”

“…HToV was detected by EM in the faeces of adult and child patients with gastroenteritis in France and the United Kingdom in 1984 [ 7 ]. Subsequently, it has been detected in the faeces of patients with or without diarrhoea in several countries by EM, immuno-EM and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) [ 55 , 56 , 57 , 58 , 59 , 60 , 61 , 62 , 63 ]. HToV shows antigenic cross-reactivity to BToV or EToV, as demonstrated by immuno-EM, ELISA, Hemagglutination inhibition test, and Western blotting [ 7 , 55 , 56 , 58 ].…”

“…HToV shows antigenic cross-reactivity to BToV or EToV, as demonstrated by immuno-EM, ELISA, Hemagglutination inhibition test, and Western blotting [ 7 , 55 , 56 , 58 ]. Due to its high prevalence, HToVs are thought to be the causative agent of human diarrhoea [ 59 , 60 , 63 ]. However, cell isolation of HToV has not yet been reported.…”
